6th Grade FAQs

 Dear Stafford 5th grade Parents,
We would like to give you information on the Stafford Middle School Band Program. Like most people, you probably have many questions about band. Our Stafford MSD band program is one of the strongest band programs around and we continue every year to grow and get better. We want every student in 5th grade to have the opportunity to sign up for band. If students do not sign up for band now, they will not have another opportunity to be in band. Band allows students a chance to practice fine motor skills, discipline, rigor, and persistence. Band is a safe place where all students can develop discipline, teamwork and the love of making music together. Band is collaborative! It teaches patience, persistence, and responsibility. These are a few reasons to sign up for band.

Selecting a music storeIt is very important that you select a music store that can provide you with the best value (not always the best price), as well as service after the sale. The school uses Collins Music Center but you can choose to use any music store you like. Based on our experience, here are some things to look for in selecting a music store:
  1. Able to supply equipment recommended by your school directors
  2. A good supply of instruments in stock at the store
  3. Two on-site repair specialists (one for brass and one for woodwinds)
  4. Knowledgeable staff that will answer your specific questions
  5. A company that is service oriented

Which brand of instrument and what supplies?               On our website is a list of the recommended instruments and supplies. The band staff has spent a great deal of time researching instruments that will not only play well, but also have a low frequency of repair. Just like automobiles, some instruments will have a tendency to need repair frequently and do not play well in tune. The supplies (brushes, swabs, oil, grease, etc.) allow the instrument to perform for the student at the optimum level. This helps keep the repair of the instruments to a minimum
When selecting an instrument at a music store, express to them that you have specific needs that are recommended by your band directors. Please DO NOT allow them to substitute something else without the approval of your band directors. The substitute product may be inferior, require additional expense, and place your child with an instrument or supplies, which will not perform well.

Should I Buy or Rent?
A musical instrument is just like any other major purchase. The more freedom your purchase plan offers, the more you will pay in the long run. Most stores offer great rental plans but they are not all the same. Here are some questions you should ask if you are considering rental.
  1. Does all rent apply to the purchase price?
  2. If I rent until I own it, how much will I have paid for the instrument?
  3. Can I apply my rental toward a step-up instrument?
  4. Am I tied to a contract or can I return the instrument at any time?
  5. What supplies are included?
  6. If the included supplies are not those on the recommended list, may I substitute?
  7. Does it come with a repair plan?

What about used instruments?            There are used instruments available form various sources: pawn shops, individuals, some music stores, etc. In many cases these instruments are in need of repair; however, there are some good deals to be found. If you run across a used instrument, we suggest that you allow the band directors to take a look at the instrument for you. Sometimes this is a good way to get a higher quality instrument for the same price or less than a new beginner instrument.
The directors look forward to working with you to ensure that your child has a positive experience in the years to come. If you have any further questions, or if your child has any special needs, feel free to email [email protected] , or [email protected]
